The weather report

Levels are stable. States are not. A state is what your consciousness is doing right now — alert, dreaming, dropped into stillness, dissolved into the room. Everyone has access to all the major states; not everyone has stabilized any of them as a permanent capacity.

Confusing a state for a stage is how a peak experience becomes a personality. It is also how a beautiful retreat becomes a hollow story six weeks later.

Why this is operational

Leaders move teams through states all day long, mostly without noticing. The opening five minutes of a meeting set a state. A long silence is a state intervention. Breath is a state intervention.

Naming the state you want — and the state the room is actually in — is half the work of leading anything.
