Why the balcony
On the dance floor, you only see what is in front of you. On the balcony, you see the patterns — who keeps stepping on whose toes, who is holding the room together, which corner of the floor is empty.
Most leaders never get on the balcony because the dance floor demands them every minute. The discipline is to leave anyway, briefly, weekly, and to write down what you see.
Re-entering
The balcony is useless if you do not come back down. Re-entry is the harder skill — bringing the wide view into the next conversation without lecturing the people who could not see it from where they were standing.
